Decoding Schotty Wk3 - Inefficient Offense

When defense is like it is, the offense has to be perfect. They weren't close vs Bears.

Tuesdays – since about 2008 – have been my day to evaluate the offense in this space. We have called it “Decoding” over those years and then the name behind the decoding is the man with the play-sheet calling the plays and hopefully putting them in an order to attack that week’s opponent. This is where we try to figure out the tactical and strategic plot-lines of the game and get a feel for how well it worked out for that side of the ball. For those of you new here, two things: 1) ask questions of anything you don’t quite understand and 2) be aware that we do defense on Wednesdays.

Here we go. Our objectives for today:

  • Inefficiency killed the day for the offense.

  • Dak Prescott and 3rd downs.

  • Javonte Williams is a positive but with a killer fumble.

  • Tyler Booker’s progress is happening.

  • Look at some All-22 film and see what we can see.

OVERALL OFFENSIVE EVALUATION

We are going to have to accept the facts that the Cowboys offense will not be able to rely on the defense this season. If the Eberflus side of the ball can begin to take care of its business at some point, great. But, for now, the offensive group is going to have to carry the mail.

Fine. Some weeks, that should happen. But, much will depend on Dak Prescott and CeeDee Lamb being the attack and with Lamb now down for about a month, that becomes a major issue. Also, the offensive line needs to be a strength and in the last 9 days, the center and right guard are both lost for several weeks, too.

In other words, this is not the start the team was looking for, even with a passing game that looked pretty strong out of the gates.

Against that backdrop, we look at the Offensive Report numbers that has plenty of mixed results to consider.

The red ink above is minimal, but significant.

  • Points (14)

  • Giveaways (4)

  • 3rd Downs (27%)

  • Red Zone (25%)
