Bob: Another fine piece. One of the things that sets you apart from other NFL writers is your ability to explain the process fundamentals for us dolts. Your style is so clear & convincing that I'm always a little surprised & disappointed when the Cowboys "brass" don't follow your outlines. It's so great to have you back & available for NFL season.

Curious no Juanyeh Thomas at Safety? I know you have to cut somewhere but it had sounded like he was impressing in camp and in the games

He was impressing, but this is a tough roster to make at safety.

Great content Bob. Correct me if I’m wrong but I think the Cowboys actually did the roster maneuver with McKeon last year, so I would think he’s eligible again, no?

Yes. My theory is they might think they won't sneak him through waivers this time.

Good Job Sturmenator. But then, never expected anything less.

Still upset about DeMarvion Overshown. Watched him the last few years at Texas & was really excited to see Cowboys draft him. He'll be missed, even though he is a rookie. Heckofa a player.

I'm a little surprised Juanyeh Thomas doesn't even get a mention? I hear Kelvin Joseph is a good special teams player but he was penalized 6 times last time, one of the most in the league. To me he is the epitome of a player that doesn't play smart. Are we sure Matt Waletzko is healthy? This is the second shoulder injury in two years, granted different shoulder. I'm thinking Richards is the swing tackle. I'd probably find a way to include Bass here. IMO he's got the higher upside than Ball. Overshown is a bad injury. It turned LB from a promising position to one with uncertainty. Just the idea of he and Clark on the field together was exciting.

THese are some good shouts. No, Waletzko and his health are a real unknown. Also, not crazy about his skills.

Mafe was destroying him before he got hurt and I thought OL play improved after Waletzko he left the game.

Another vote for Juanyeh. I'm assuming the boneheaded penalty was the final straw?

Not saying he's starter quality but he was on the rise and he could play ST.

Go Jackets! (We don't have much to cheer about, Bob. Help a brutha out.)

honestly, that is the one wildcard. If Bones says he is a special teams ace, then our evaluations of pretty much everything else won't matter. But, that is hard to detect from the outside. Let's watch special teams closely this week.

Bob, am I correct that the league has a flat amount of pay for all players on the practice squad (or taxi squad, for the old timers)? Since NFL players get their salary divided over the 18-week season, does a player who bounces between the 53-man roster and the practice squad get a different amount from week to week? Also, if a player is elevated to the main roster, but not activated, do they receive their weekly contract amount. This must give the bookkeepers and HR people nightmares.

Seeing news now of Sam Williams' arrest on Sunday. Do you think that impacts his roster spot, given his prior off season run-ins with the law?

Good list. Mostly agree. Most list I have seen assume they keep J. Lewis on PUP as an insurance policy, but I agree they could decide to move on. I think they might keep J. Thomas over one of the 3 (K. Joseph, N. Wright, or C.J. Goodwin), but I guess it makes more sense to keep both Wright and Joseph, if they do decide to move on from Lewis. Of course, they could end up keeping more than 53 is something like Wright begins on the PUP or IR. I'm surprised not to see Farniok, but I also think they should not keep more than 9 OL, as they don't have the talent there to justify keeping more. They should keep who they think are the best 4 backups and move on. I agree about kicker. They may not normally win you games, but they can lose you games.

Why keep Lewis and Goodwin? Let lewis start year on pup then release him when healthy.

What's my solution for them: Joseph. He can be backup slot and special teams ace.

You save consider $ by cutting those 2 and can carry over to next year for the big extensions

Goodwin is a constant keeper because he has been a constant keeper. If they move on, it would not shock me, but I need to see it first.

Splitting hairs here but I would think Farniok gets onto the squad over Hoffman. Simply because of his familiarity with the scheme and they can probably get Bass or Hoffman to the practice squad.

Farniok probably should get the nod, but he has been disappointing to me this camp.

I agree Farniok probably makes the team.

What’s going on with J Cox? He was pretty promising prior to his injury.

Agree with Dalton about Juanyeh, that’s a bit of a surprise. Also, I thought Goodwin was a CB.

I believe Goodwin has been listed at CB. He is not really CB or safety. He is a special teams player. I think Juanyeh will make it over one of the three (K. Joseph, Wright, or Goodwin). I think DQ will use depth at safety to help out at LB.

Exactly. We can list him at any defensive position. It doesn't actually matter much. DB!
