Mavs Get Klay And Excitement Abounds
The team that was one shooter short in the finals goes and gets one of all-time best.
This one is pretty hard to believe.
Yes, I know all the “yeah, but” responses to the Mavericks getting Klay Thompson onto their roster last week, but there still has to be some moment when it is tough to conceive that this is a reality.
The Dallas Mavericks were just in the NBA Finals. In 2024, with the roster they are putting together on the fly, they quickly came together to win 13 playoff games in a world where 16 wins it all.
They were close. Really close.
Of course, we do know that comes with no guarantees about ever getting another sniff, but they can definitely see that their ideas are bearing fruit.
So, why not keep hunting for pieces?
In the next few weeks, we can and will spend time on the other “new Mavericks” because each of them has promise. In fact, Naji Marshall and Quentin Grimes are both pieces that this rotation will use to mitigate the costs of Josh Green and Derrick Jones Jr. not staying with the group. Those two rotation pieces were massive contributors at different times, and I never imagined a world where Jones didn’t remain in Dallas.
These are all conversations worth having soon enough. And I imagine Melvin Ajinca is probably a name we will need to learn soon enough, too.
But today, I want to spend an entire piece on adding Klay Thompson to this roster.
