My Three Pregame Thoughts on Super Bowl 58
We have a wonderful showdown in Las Vegas to determine football history.
We are here at the final football game of the year.
The feelings of sadness when you pop on the television and have a long springtime of non-football related sporting options can wait for a few more days.
We have to get you ready for the Super Bowl. And not just any Super Bowl, but one that will determine whether we allow the Kansas City Chiefs into the dynasty club.
You may be familiar with this concept, but this is a club where I keep a very close membership list, because the media - as a whole – cannot be trusted with this important labeling system.
You see, they throw around the “dynasty” label way too easily and I have been fighting tirelessly to preserve its meaning. There is no exception to this rule if you ask me. Tried and true, you must be your league’s champion at least three times in a span of six years or less. We would also settle for four championships in eight years or less or five championships in ten years or less. Basically, three titles in twice the number of years is the standard.
That means, since 1960, here are the complete and exclusive list of NFL dynasties:
Green Bay Packers, 5 titles in 7 years (61, 62, 65, 66, 67)
Pittsburgh Steelers, 4 titles in 6 years (74, 75, 78. 79)
San Francisco 49ers, 4 titles in 9 years (81, 84, 88, 89) and the requisite 3 in 6.
Dallas Cowboys, 3 titles in 4 years (92, 93, 95)
New England Patriots, 3 titles in 4 years (01, 03, 04)
New England Patriots, 3 titles in 5 years (14, 16, 18)
We have six NFL Dynasties and now a chance to add a 7th with Kansas City, who have won the 2019 and 2022 titles and now can bag 2023 with one more win. Even if they lose, they will also have 2024 inside the window and considering they also attended the 2020 Super Bowl, you definitely see how powerful this team has become.
And now, we get a chance to see them square off against a NFL heavyweight like San Francisco that is attempting to end their own championship drought that is actually one year longer than Cowboys own. Of course, losing a bunch of Super Bowls is much better than not coming close to attending.
I cannot wait for this one.
Super Bowl 58 takes the show to Las Vegas and we need to do our best to size this one up, because the span of time between here and Opening Night 2024 is a lengthy 207 days until we get another meaningful game. Let’s get down to business.
