Quick Hit: Mavericks Trade Luka Doncic Away and Nobody Knows Why
I'm shocked and you're shocked and there is no real explanation that makes sense.
I usually don’t sleep well. Three hours here, up for 90 minutes, three more hours there and then we get up tired again.
But, once in a while, I use a little help to sleep and I am GONE. Eight hours of glorious coma. It is deep and rare.
Last night was one of those nights.
So, when you wake up and realize the most shocking DFW sports thing that could happen has really happened – one so crazy that it hasn’t even been on the table of far off hypotheticals for years – it takes a few minutes to get your balance.
The Mavericks traded Luka Doncic to the Los Angeles Lakers in a trade that is so lopsided and out of left field that you cannot even believe it is real. It feels like the NBA allowed the Lakers to write up a deal and submit it without the Mavericks having any say in the matter.
It makes no sense on any level if you love the Mavericks:
BREAKING: The Dallas Mavericks are trading Luka Doncic, Maxi Kleber and Markieff Morris to the Los Angeles Lakers for Anthony Davis, Max Christie and a 2029 first-round pick, sources tell ESPN. Three-team deal that includes Utah.
I am stunned for about a dozen reasons.
This is the type of trade proposal on social media that gets you laughed at. The salaries might work in a deal like this, but the logic doesn’t.
Now, the Lakers would always trade nearly 32-year old and often injured Anthony Davis for a 25-year old player who is entering his prime and already one of the five best players on the planet and maybe that is even selling him short.
Doncic is a rare superstar. A Hall of Famer already. A universally popular icon who has made the Dallas Mavericks “worldwide relevant” which is not something to be taken lightly. And with people of a certain age, their favorite Maverick of all time.
And not only did the Mavericks deal him, but it was their idea?
