So, Tyron Smith, is this goodbye?
We tackle that and his 2023 performance in this week's Monday Cowboys offering.
We have been doing this a long time and apparently it is time to do it again.
That’s right folks, it is time for our offseason Tyron Smith discussion – perhaps this time, for the last time.
Now, if you have been with me for any period of time, there is the one Dallas Cowboy that I will valiantly defend against all comers. He is above reproach and his excellence for years and years has bought him barrels of ink worth of benefit of the doubt from #SturmStack and all related ventures. Like DeMarcus Ware before him, I will not tolerate any slander or premature declarations about his demise. Future Hall of Famers who have been textbook perfect Cowboys in every way get that sort of treatment from me.
But, this time, is it real?
The following Tweet – for those who are not blocked by Ian Rapoport – had interrupted a nice peaceful weekend for those of us who were expecting an easy settlement between player and organization.
Now, again, we did this in 2019 when the campaign from Cowboys fans to move on from Tyron because he is getting old started. I wrote this piece back then at our old stop.
After studying where he is in his career, there is no question he has quite a few miles already on his odometer. But I also have no doubt he can play left tackle at a high level for several more years and, either way, the Cowboys have him under a very nice contract
Then, I did an updated look last spring because the torches were out in high volumes! So, I wrote this piece in May of 2023:
There is nothing that football fans love more than “new” to energize them. New draft picks, new signings, maybe even a new coach. We know old doesn’t work because we have tried the old stuff and it was too frustrating. Please, give us new.
Old? Please, waiter, take this away. I am done with it. This player is too old and too expensive. We have seen what he has done and, to quote nearly everyone: “He isn’t getting any younger.”
Well, thank you for that top-shelf analysis.
You might recall he played a fantastic 2023 if you were willing to grade him with items that don’t confirm your priors.
