The Biggest Questions Remain The Same
As Dallas tries to reimagine, we still are wondering what the scheme is going to be.
I do love a mystery. And Brian Schottenheimer is providing one for us.
This offseason has been a lot of fun as we spend time trying to figure out what the Cowboys’ plans appear to be, as we are overrun with cultural discussions. Culture is great and all, but we tend to believe that the issues here have not been a bad locker room filled with bad guys, but rather a football team that wasn’t good enough at key spots to deal with the heavyweights of the league.
Somehow, that has not been much of the talk this entire spring.
In particular, given that we have made it into the month of May without too many online fights about the future of the offense and QB1, I guess we should all thank the universe for giving us things to occupy our time—even when the universe decided to give us even more frustrating topics. Whether it was trading the biggest sports icon in DFW, the baseball team starting up again, or the hockey team trying to go win a Cup, the Cowboys topics have been a little light relative to normal. Those topics that do exist seem to revolve mostly around whether everyone is developing friendships and hanging out together enough.
What makes it interesting, of course, is that they do have much bigger fish to fry in terms of dealing with Philadelphia and now Washington in the NFC East. That only gets sorted if they start showing some teeth on both sides of the ball. Particularly, they have to make the offense make sense again. So, they hired an offensive coach to be their new head coach and play-caller without even leaving the building. This suggests a seamless handoff from one man to the next who worked right under him.
But the debate doesn’t fully make sense, because it appeared to be a frustrating offense that led to the dismount of the former head coach, Mike McCarthy, right? That might call for something fresh and new, but instead, they grabbed an apple off the same tree.
And that makes us quite curious about the master plan.
