The Stars get Chris Tanev; Nill Continues to Cook
We bring in Sean Shapiro to help us break down the "go for it" play from Dallas.
Rule No. 1: “Always publish your pieces as fast as you can so they don’t become outdated when news breaks.”
I say that because with now eight days until the trade deadline, we had big plans!
I had our editor and hockey expert Sean Shapiro of Shap Shots (give that newsletter a try!) ready to help us preview the NHL trade deadline in earnest for Thursday Morning. On Wednesday, we were trading thoughts on whether the Stars should put all of their efforts into Chris Tanev or perhaps make a play on a younger option like Philadelphia’s Sean Walker.
It was going to be a great piece, but now you will never see it.
Why? Because the Stars didn’t wait for us. They pulled the trigger on a deal way before we could finish our effort and publish in the morning. The Stars chased down Calgary and finally found a deal (with help from New Jersey) on a deal to get Chris Tanev for a price significantly less than we (here at Sturmstack) were probably willing to pay.
I have always admired Tanev and the ties to the Stars go back at least seven years, if you can believe it, to when Vancouver reportedly was trying to trade him to Dallas for the No. 3 overall pick that of course became Miro Heiskanen (a player Vancouver did not have interest in, reportedly). Thankfully, Jim Nill was not having it.
Regardless, the Stars have their man to pair with Miro now on the top pairing (we figure) for the stretch run. Also, as Nill hinted when he was on the Hardline on Tuesday, they get that experienced addition they thought they could use on the backend for those playoff battle.
Elliotte Friedman broke the story and what a nice surprise that was to see.
A second, Artem Grushnikov, and a conditional pick? Yes, please.
With that in mind, let’s grab Sean and talk this out. He had done so much heavy lifting for our original concept – including fancy charts and video, that I want to basically, give it to his fantastic breakdown. Enjoy:
