We Are Getting "deGrom Days" In Our Lives

Don't look now, but this could be the summer that we finally get him every 5 days.

We truly live in an amazing sports city, so I know that having the freedom to write about “whatever I want” during a given stretch of time puts us all in an interesting spot.

For instance, tonight marks the start of the Stars' run in the Western Conference Final, and there’s truly no sporting event that will have more of my attention. But my preview with Sean Shapiro was published yesterday, and I could have just let that ride. You know I’ll be writing after every playoff game, as we’ve already been doing.

Basketball-wise, I do want to write about the Mavericks’ fascinating choice between playing for the present or the future. I’ll get to it soon. Also, I think I have a Jalen Brunson piece in me, but that one may never actually happen. Not sure.

Cowboys? I have at least three more rookie film studies in the bin and ready to write, but I keep putting them off until the time feels right (and we actually get a slow few days around here). We also have several Cowboys-adjacent projects in the works.

And yet, I’ve been wanting to work in a Jacob deGrom piece for a few weeks, and now is my chance. So rather than spending more time talking about it, let’s get to the good stuff.

Today is deGrom Day—just like May 10 in Detroit and May 15 in Arlington were.

They're happening more and more in 2025, and today’s outing at Yankee Stadium in the Bronx will be the 10th one in a row.

Ten starts is a relatively low number, of course, since starting pitchers aim for 30–32 to feel like they've pitched a full season. Then, ideally, there are another 5–6 starts in the postseason if everything goes right. But 10 is a significant milestone for deGrom, because we know that 15 is his high over the past six years of his career.

Back in 2019, he made 32 starts—that was his sixth season in the big leagues, and they had all been relatively healthy up to that point.
