The impatience we've seen with the 2023 draft is wild. Not everything will be instantly gratified. OSA is good now, but he has improved markedly each year. Give Maxi a chance. Luke was hurt. Hasn't had a chance. Give him a chance. Everyone like Overshown. Chiiiiillllll.

This is true, I agree.

But let's say I'm not optimistic. Schoonmaker, even when healthy, didn't impress me much in college and, well, he's never healthy.

Mazi.....he and Overshon are probably the best bets to become reliable starters (which this team, which struggles in other areas of roster building, really relies upon from their top picks). Really hoping for Mazi to make a huge leap but it's more hope than belief - he just didn't look like a player last year. And 1st round picks who look as out of place as he did rarely develop.

But you are right that it's too early to judge a draft class. I would point out, however, that you didn't need patience to judge the 2014, 2016, 2020, 2021 or 2022 drafts....you knew after the rookie years you had players.

Osa has developed some, but he was a good, productive player on day 1. That's not true for Mazi - or Schoonmaker, really.

People need to come to terms with the fact that 2023 was a bad draft class in its entirety, and every player after the first 10 or so was taken a round or two too early. Mazi and Schoon are 3rd/4th round players in other drafts, and that's how they should be evaluated.

Thanks for making me relive those years. It was beneficial. I think.

Bob Sturm, you are the Dallas GM. You have two elite players in Lamb and Parson. You have a veteran top 5-10 QB, You have other starters making $10 million plus, like Martin, Digs, Steele, etc. what % of your cap goes to your top 3? Do you keep them all. Do you franchise Ceedee or Parsons? What are you telling Jerry he has to do?

Hi Bob

It’s that time of year again when we look for any signs that we can be optimistic about our team for the regular season (and beyond?). With that in mind and because we won’t see the locked-in starters until Week 1, did you see anything of note from the projected first team players in the practice against the Rams?

I agree with Bob that this preseason is the Trey Lance show. More and more I believe this is Prescott’s last year in Dallas because all evidence says the contract he wants is so large and so one-sided that the Cowboys will say no. If Lance can show improvement through the three preseason games I believe he is QB1 in 2025. After that who knows. Also in the who knows category is how Prescott leaving Dallas affects first Lamb and then Parsons. My prediction for 2025 is Prescott is gone, Lamb gets the big contract this year, Parsons plays on the 2025 extension and 2024 collapses in the second half of the season. I’m prepared for lots of Fall and Winter golf and more great columns from Bob detailing the next Jones era crash.
